How to Become a Mason at Gateway Lodge No. 40
Gateway Lodge No. 40, AF & AM is a Masonic lodge in Creve Coeur, Missouri (St. Louis County). We meet on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month, and men interested in Freemasonry are welcome to join us for dinner before any meeting.
Who can become a Freemason?
In Missouri, you may petition a Masonic lodge if you:
- Are a man at least 18 years of age
- Believe in a Supreme Being (Freemasonry is not a religion and welcomes men of every faith)
- Are of good moral character and reputation
- Live in Missouri (the Grand Lodge of Missouri sets a minimum residency period — we will confirm the current requirement with you)
- Are joining of your own free will — no one will ever be pressured or recruited
How do I join?
- Reach out. Email our Secretary at gateway40secretary@gmail.com or send a message on our Facebook page. Tell us a little about yourself and why you are interested.
- Come to dinner. Join us before a stated communication (1st or 3rd Tuesday, dinner at 6:30 PM) at the Rose Hill Masonic Center. This is the best way to meet the members and see if the lodge is a good fit.
- Petition the lodge. When you are ready, a member will sponsor your petition. A small committee will meet with you and your family to answer questions.
- Ballot and degrees. The lodge votes on your petition. Once elected, you will receive the three degrees of Freemasonry — Entered Apprentice, Fellowcraft and Master Mason — typically over several months.
How long does it take?
From petition to Master Mason typically takes 4 to 12 months. The petition, investigation and ballot usually take 1 to 3 months; you then receive the Entered Apprentice, Fellowcraft and Master Mason degrees over the following months, with a mentor to guide you through each one.
How much does it cost?
There is a one-time petition/degree fee and modest annual dues. Contact the Secretary for current amounts — cost should never be the reason a good man does not join.
When and where do you meet?
Stated communications are the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month. Dinner is at 6:30 PM and lodge opens at 7:30 PM (on degree nights we start an hour earlier — check the event calendar).
